SUAVE began its journey in 2019 as the University of Sydney Design Build Fly Team (USYD DBF), under the guidance of our academic advisor Dr. KC Wong, to take part in the innovative movement of UAVs in Australia. The goal of this team was to represent the University of Sydney and the nation at the international DBF competition, hosted by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). 

The team started small, with less than 15 members at the beginning. Following research, preparation and training over a few years, the team joined the University of Sydney Union (USU) and rebranded as Sydney UAV Engineering; expanding to reach a wider audience, while maintaining the competitive USYD DBF team which has now grown to over 50 members. 

Since its establishment in 2022, SUAVE has had exponential growth, becoming the premier aerospace society at the University, accumulating international accolades and recognition at the AIAA DBF competition; and establishing state-of-the-art research projects that strive to change the UAV industry. Fuelled by our recent achievements, SUAVE is continually looking into more areas where research can be conducted, to provide avenues for students within the University to pursue their interests, while contributing to the capabilities in Australia.
